A few tips for a horse owner:

• Know your horses normal temperature.
• Take your horses temperature with a rectal thermometer when you suspect something is wrong.  This will aid in your decision and provide quality info to your veterinarian. 
• Evaluate your horses normal water consumption.
• Evaluate your horses normal manure/urine output. 

All of these factors will aid you and your discussion with your veterinarian in the event of an emergency of sickness.
